Buffalo grass is native to the United States grows well in the central regions to give a drought resistant, thick lawn. Buffalo grass seed lawns grow well in the warmer months but will become dormant as the temperature cools. They are extremely low maintenance and even in the hot summer months do not need to a great deal of watering. They do however need well drained soil.
If you have infertile soil Buffalo grass seed is ideal as it will thrive, in fact a very fertile soil will only cause problems with diseases and pests. Fertilize at the rate of around 1 pound of nitrogen for each 500 square feet only once during the growing season. It does not need a lot of watering and it’s very drought tolerant. Watering every two weeks with 2 inches of water is adequate. Mowing should be done once a week in the growing season cutting the grass to around 3 inches.
Seeding a Buffalo Grass Lawn
A lawn established from seed will be stronger then one made from plugs but will take at least two growing seasons to become fully established. It is best to use treated buffalo grass seed as this germinates better.

Buffalo grass does not tolerate shade and needs full sunlight to thrive. Soil must be well drained but preferably not too fertile. Buffalo grass prefers clay soils to sandy soils and does not tolerate heavy traffic.
